Can Type 2 diabetes be prevented or delayed for those at high risk? The answer is "yes."
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
The Diabetes Prevention Program, or DPP, a landmark study funded by NIH and NIDDK, continues to show that type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed among those at high risk.
After 10 years of follow up with thousands of study participants, we know that making lifestyle changes to lose a modest amount of weight is still the best way to delay or prevent type 2 diabetes.
So if you’re at risk, aim to lose a modest amount of weight by exercising 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, and choose healthy foods.
