You may want to spice up your life, but if you have kidney disease – watch out for the salt.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
If you have kidney disease, your doctor may tell you to cut back on foods that are high in salt which can raise your blood pressure and cause swelling.
To spice up the healthy way, try these tips:
- Read food labels.
- Choose sodium-free, no added salt or low-sodium food products.
- Instead of salt, use herbs, spices, and salt-free seasoning.
- Choose fresh meat, rather than canned or processed types.
- And cut back on frozen food, packaged mixes, canned soups, and salad dressing.
