NIDDK New Investigators Workshop

September 27-28, 2004

Lister Hill Conference Center, NIH
Bethesda, MD

Meeting Description

In an effort to facilitate the career development of NIDDK supported investigators and help in their transition to independent research careers, the Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Diseases (DEM) and the Digestive Diseases and Nutrition (DDN) divisions of the NIDDK sponsored the 'NIDDK New Investigators Workshop' September 27-28, 2004 on the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD. Participation in the workshop was limited to investigators currently supported by NIDDK K-awards and to NIDDK intramural senior postdoctoral fellows.

The purpose of the meeting was to offer NIDDK supported new investigators with an in-depth view of the NIH, the NIDDK, and the grants process. The meeting provided an opportunity to become familiar with the roles of various NIH staff, the types of grant support and resources available, and the inner workings of the peer review system. Senior investigators from the endocrine and gastroenterology communities provided grant writing tips and career advice. In addition, NIDDK program officers were available for one-on-one discussions of individual research projects.
