DR. RODGERS: Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.

I'm joined by Joel Gamoran, head chef and founder of Homemade, author of “Cooking Scrappy,” and host of Scrappy TV.

JOEL GAMORAN: Thanks so much for having me on the show. Do you feel like the way that people eat can really equate to their health, meaning it's a medicine that is maybe underutilized?

DR. RODGERS: We just finished a strategic plan for the NIH for Nutrition Research, and one of the chapters is “Food as Medicine.” There are foods that are good for the heart and good for the brain, and good for other parts of your body. We want to explore what is a good food prescription for people who have chronic illnesses like arthritis and diabetes, and certainly tackling the obesity epidemic. Given your diet and your metabolism, there are things that you might avoid and things that you should try to emphasize.
