Office of Health & Engagement Research

Pamela Thornton
Acting Director

NIDDK established the Office of Health and Engagement Research (OHER) to enhance collaboration, structures, and programs to support robust research to promote optimal health of all people and communities. OHER collaborates and coordinates across scientific and programmatic divisions to:

  • support and expand NIDDK’s health disparities research portfolio and align activities with the Institute’s strategic research priorities for reducing health disparities,
  • develop and strengthen a multidisciplinary biomedical scientific workforce capable of implementing NIDDK’s Strategic Plan, and
  • promote community engagement and support in all areas of the Institute’s research efforts to advance the NIDDK mission and position community members as valued partners in research.

OHER facilitates community engagement and develops relationships built on trust to provide relevant input into program and initiative development. OHER collaborates with other NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices to develop plans and funding opportunities in areas of significant health disparities of mutual interest—such as diabetes, obesity, nutrition-related disorders, hepatitis C, gallbladder disease, H. pylori infection, sickle cell disease, kidney diseases, and complications from infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
