Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) Protocol
This study will see whether external stimulation to the brain will lead to changes in eating patterns and weight. Previous research has shown that an area of the brain responsible for the feeling of hunger and fullness, known as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, is less active in people with obesity compared to lean people after a meal.
What is required:
- One outpatient screening visit (2 hours) to ensure you meet study participation criteria
- One outpatient baseline and one follow-up visit (5-6 hours each) with:
- computer tests and questionnaires to determine your eating habits, mood, and levels of awareness/thinking
- a test to measure your body composition
- a weight loss and diet counseling session
- four functional MRI scans performed on two different days at a local hospital to see if brain activity is stimulated by tDCS
- 27 morning outpatient visits (lasting approximately 1 hour), 3 days a week for 9 weeks for brain stimulation sessions
- You will be asked to eat a 25% reduced calorie diet during that 9-week period (outlined during the counseling session)
- Compensation is provided
Who can participate:
- 18-60 years old
- In generally good health
