Responsibilities & Activities

I oversee basic and translational non-human animal studies on the development, structure, and function of the neural systems that control feeding, energy balance, and metabolism. I also oversee a portfolio of basic and translational non-human animal research on diabetic peripheral neuropathy. In addition, I oversee the Loan Repayment Program for the for the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolic Diseases, as well as the oversee the SBIR / STTR program focused on the prevention and treatment of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

Research Programs

Endocrinology & Hormone Signaling
Hormone and nutrient sensing by the central nervous system, and coordination of energy homeostasis with the stress and reproductive axes in the brain.

Metabolism, Energy Balance & Obesity
Energy balance, thermogenesis, and the control of metabolism by the autonomic nervous system in obesity and diabetes.

Neurobiology of Obesity
Neurobiology of energy homeostasis and peripheral metabolism. Basic studies on homeostatic and hedonic contributions to obesity and type 2 diabetes. Neurobiology of food appraisal, motivation, memory and foraging.
