Grant Writing Workshops

The NIDDK Fellows Career Development and Recruitment Office holds intensive grant writing workshops to teach NIDDK fellows the essential concepts and skills to prepare a successful grant proposal. The workshops are open to current NIDDK postdoctoral, clinical, research, and visiting fellows and special volunteers—and are closed to the public.

Write a Competitive Grant Proposal

NIDDK grant writing workshops are immersive and comprehensive, tasking participants to develop a rigorous, well-defined experimental plan over 3 six-hour sessions across 6 days. With an emphasis on NIH proposals, the curriculum uniquely addresses the career transition K grant series, Nancy Nossal Fellowship Awards, and K99/R00 applications.

Gain Critical Skills for Future Employment

Fellows participating in the workshops gain an edge in future employment—especially at academic institutions—by practicing critical thinking to develop budgets and justifications. These skills are essential for receiving research funding and running a laboratory.

Workshop Activities

The workshops combine didactic lectures with group and individual activities and assignments, including

  • drafting an NIH-style biosketch
  • navigating NIH-funded research project databases
  • analyzing and outlining each facet of a grant proposal
  • participating in mock study sessions
